ARDC National Skills Forum: Skills Catalytic Converters

28 January 2025

19/2/24

Date:

Location:

Online

Most people turn up to training ready to learn a new skill. Yet we know that getting to training is only the first hurdle. In this forum, the ARDC skills team will ask how about those catalysts that help researchers apply introductory skills training to real world research questions. What supports learners to confidently bring new digital and data skills into their research practice? Is it value added by embedded analysts? Is it a structured mentorship and development programs? Is it finding your place in a supportive community? How can institutions support the stickiness of skills?

Who will be speaking?

  • Rowland Mosbergen, Research Computing Platform Strategic Engagement and Planning Manager, WEHI

  • Amy Cotton, Manager, Graduate Researcher Development, University of Technology Sydney

  • Craig Windell, eResearch Analyst, QCIF

  • Magda Gulielmo, Scientific Computing Specialist, CSIRO

Who should attend?

People who train researchers and broader stakeholders invested in data skill uplift in research, including but not limited to:

  • Trainers and training managers

  • Research Software Engineers, and NCRIS and compute facilities staff

  • Researchers who coach and mentor peers and colleagues

  • Higher Degree Research Supervisors

  • HDR Students

What participants will gain from the session?

  • Enhanced Understanding: By sharing and discussing their experiences, participants can better understand the key takeaways and their applications to their work.

  • New Perspectives: Hearing about others’ insights and applications can provide new perspectives and ideas that participants might not have considered.

Skill Reinforcement: Revisiting and discussing what was learned can reinforce new skills and knowledge, making it more likely that participants will effectively apply them in their work.

This event is hosted by the ARDC.
